Chapter 7

“So listen, Amelia, I’m practically high on coffee by now.” Doug reached across their table at Santa’s Workshop, which Amelia had shuddered to notice, was the same one she’d sat at to write to the two Johns. He took her hand. “Do you want to go get a stronger drink somewhere?”

Amelia blinked. She wasn’t a parent, but she appeared to be more worried about John than he was. “Your son…”

“He’s fine! He’s in heaven. Just texted me that he was on a sled dog ride, then the post office lady—Clara is it?—and some guy with a reindeer name are taking him out for ice cream. He’s having a blast.”

“Okay.” Amelia wasn’t so sure. John had glared daggers at her when his dad handed him money to leave. Seemed odd if going out on his own was his idea as his father claimed. “Wouldn’t he rather be with you?”

“Trust me, he’s having a lot more fun out there than he would be in here.”

Amelia pressed her lips together. It wasn’t her place to tell Doug he was totally missing the point. This wasn’t about bringing John back here, but getting Doug out there. Her earlier assumption that this amazingly sexy guy was also a great dad was eroding pretty rapidly. He might be fabulous to look at, he might set her heart on a racing course when he looked at her, or touched her as he was doing now, his fingers strong and warm laced through hers, but…she refused to be interested in him as relationship temptation. Not even a fling.

This was a first for her.

That aside, she had been very interested to learn that like his dad, the pudgy guy whose picture Google came up with, Doug, Jr. was also a real estate agent, with contacts all over the country, who was confident he could help her sell Cup of Cheer quickly. If he could do that, she would love him forever.

From a safe distance.

“Thanks for the offer, but I should get back to the café.”

“Aw, one drink won’t hurt.” His thumb rubbed along hers, his blue eyes were magnets to her female side.

But they weren’t strong enough to override her new common sense.

“Sorry, I—” She broke off to stare in horror at Rudy charging toward them like a steam locomotive, his eyes flashing. Had something happened to John? She leaped to her feet. “Rudy, what’s wrong?”

Rudy ignored her, looked contemptuously down at Doug from his impressive height, hands on his hips.

Doug looked coolly up into the enormous man’s angry face, but his knuckles were white on the handle of his mug. “Is there a problem?”

Amelia felt sick. Is there a problem? Not Is my son all right?

“I’d say. Your kid has been hanging with Clara and me all afternoon. Nice kid. Great kid. A lot of fun. But guess what? We’re not his parents.” He pointed a beefy arm toward the store’s exit. “You need to get off your ass and do your job as his father.”

He snapped his mouth shut, gave one final glare, then turned and clomped out of the store.
